VAYIERA

One of the most important moments in Torah is the Akedah – the sacrifice of Isaac.  Here on the three-day journey to what is Mount Moriah, Abraham sees a cloud and a fire rising from the ground to the sky.  Isaac who was in his thirties (not the kid often represented in this story) carried wood for a sacrifice and he too saw the flame. The two others on this journey were Ishmael, Isaac’s brother from the handmaiden Hagar, and Eliezer, who was head of Abraham’s household. Next to the donkey, they are compared to the beast that does not have vision to see miracles.  These two did not see the spiritual metaphysical calling on the mount. Abraham carries a sacrificial knife and the embers for a fire.  Isaac carrying the wood understood and accepted that he was to be the sacrifice.
