Vayislach

What is the value of possessions? In this parsha Jacob, wanting to protect his family, has put them on one side of a river, and now he is said to be “alone.” A permutation of that Hebrew word, is also the word for “jar.”  There was a jar that Jacob left on the other side of the river, and he went to retrieve it. Why does this object have importance? Possessions are memories. If we have them we should care for them. But are they items for the future? In this case, this particular jar was to be the jar that Moses will use to anoint his brother Aaron to be high priest and his sons as well, and will be used later to anoint the various kings of Israel, including David and Solomon and the prophets Elijah and Elisha.  Did Jacob foresee the significance of this object? Are there objects that we have that will make a difference in someone else’s future? The dark angel above will soon wrestle with Jacob to determine his future.
