VAYERA

How do we treat strangers?  in our time it seems we are becoming more and more suspicious of the “other.”  But the man honored by all the major religions had his tent open on all sides and greeted every stranger as an equal even washing their feet.  The Zohar speaks of two trees next to Abraham’s tent that responded to the goodness of the stranger.  If they were kind and open a tree would extend its branches to provide shade.  In this case Abraham was visited by three angels – Michael in white, Gabriel in red and Raphael in green, But Abraham just saw them as travelers to be cared for. The other tree, when selfish bigoted people arrived, its branches became barren and extended up.  We could use those sensitive trees around us now.
