How to make sense of dreams?

Here we have the well known story of Jacob, fleeing the wrath of his brother, and sleeping, they say, on the very mountain that will be where Hashem will give the Torah.  Jacob has the dream of the ladder, which dream has been variously interpreted for millennia! Besides the angels ascending and descending, some say there are only four rungs to the ladder, each representing one of the worlds that we live in simultaneously: red for the world of making – our world of the senses, purple for the world of formation, sometimes thought as the place of dreams, blue for the world of creation possibly made of the minuscule essential elements both literally and spiritually that make up the universe, and yellow for emanation which is the undefinable connection to the higher power of creation itself. Also, it is said that four of the arrogant domineering cultures fell from the ladder because of their selfishness and cruelty, which included the Babylonians, the Persians, the Greeks and the Romans, all whose imperial societies have disappeared.  Can we hold onto the ladder?
