One of the striking aspects of all of our Torah ancestors is their acknowledged failures in their characters. This makes them human and allows us to realize that even those we deeply admire have weaknesses, just like we do. So we can strive to improve without reaching for perfection. They certainly weren’t perfect and yet made great contributions. Here we find the young Joseph, favored by his father Jacob, accusing his brothers of foul behavior that wasn’t true. Being the favorite of his father he was given special gifts. We know one as a coat of many colors but this is a gross mistranslation of the Hebrew that has other meanings like long cloak with long sleeves. Some say it was embroidered and mostly white. Note that the very handsome boy was conscious of his good looks and painted his eyes. A big ego that almost cost him his life, and in his subsequent humiliation and imprisonment, he learned humility and the source of all strength – Hashem.
