VAYECHI

How to eliminate evil? In this Midrash, violence was an answer.  Esau, cruelly wanting to prevent the burial of his brother Jacob in the cave of Machpaila, where their ancestors were interred, has his head lopped off by Chushim, the son of Dan. The bleeding severed bloviating head of Esau landed at Jacob’s feet. Chushim, holding his ear, was deaf and didn’t have to hear the haranguing babble of Esau. A permutation of Chushim’s Hebrew name is Mashiach, suggesting that we must rid ourselves of evil, clearing the way for the Mashiach, here represented by the crown and star and purifying oil. This cave is thought to be an entrance into Gan Eden and the patriarchs and matriarchs buried here are identified by the colors (and names) associated with them in Kabbalah.  May we find ways to remove evil in our times that don’t have to be as violent.
