Who are we? Our choice? Or our heritage? Here Isaac and Rivkah have twins – Jacob and Esau, who was born red skinned and hairy. Two nations emerge from them, striving for different goals. One will follow the ethics of Torah and the other will pursue power at any expense. And they both will produce mighty leaders. From Jacob will come King Solomon who lived by the Torah and built the sacred temple and from Esau the dictator Hadrian who will destroy it. And later will come one of the greatest sages Yehuda Hanassi the Prince who wrote the Mishnah and from Esau the empower Antoninus. And with these latter two is the promise of transcending the differences as they became colleagues, but it is said, not until the Messiah comes, will we again truly be close brothers.
