TETZAVEH

There are many metaphors for the Jewish people.  One comes from this week’s parsha.  We are compared here to olive trees and olives.  The olive oil to be used in the lighting of the lamps in the Mishkan begins this section.  Olives are picked, chosen, then they are put under enormous pressure. The trees take a long time to develop, but once ready they have an abundant fruit.  They can withstand extreme conditions.  As the bitter fruit is transformed, it becomes sweet oil.  The olive branch is also a symbol of peace.  May we too be reflective of these properties.  The color of those here working the olives is that of the tribe of Asher whose symbol was the olives and leaves and were known for providing good foods.
