This parsha initially speaks to birth. The Midrash speaks to the newborn having all the wisdom and knowledge of Torah and more, but as the child emerges an angel touches it above its lips – the philtrum – and with this new cleft, all this understanding is concealed and even forgotten. We have to relearn what we already deeply know. This is our journey in life. The parsha also references the leprosy-like skin disease called Tsaaras. One of the reasons for contracting the disease is lashon hara – evil tongue – gossip. The man in the rain has his mouth and other source of bad talk bound. The rain though is Hashem’s free gift providing for our survival.
