This story always jumps out when reading Torah. Here the sons of Aaron, Nadab and Abihu wanted to get as close to Hashem as possible. There is much commentary on what happened to them. We know their bodies died on approaching the Holy of Holies where the ark is kept, and which officially can only be approached once by the Kohen Gadol on Yom Kippur. When they entered impetuously, but well intentioned, a fire swept down through the cherubim on top of the ark and filaments went toward each and divided entering their nostrils and pulling out their souls. We have to prepare ourselves properly for entering challenging circumstances. Their desire overran their preparation. They wanted something they weren’t ready for. That is represented by the incense fires they brought in, which were not correctly made. The Midrash speaks of an angel who pushed them out of the Holy of Holies so their relatives could bury them, otherwise they would have rotted where no one could enter. An angel’s concern for honoring and grieving.
