Shelach Haftorah – Joshua 2:1–24

Shelach Haftorah - Joshua 2:1–24

Another pair of “spies” is sent into Jericho and they went to the house of a harlot named Rahab who agreed to protect them if they would, after the Hebrews took over the area, save her family (upper left).  She was called to the king questioning whether she had seen spies, but she said two men had stayed at hers, but then fled away.   She then suggested to the Hebrews that they hide in the ceiling amidst straw, and the soldiers went off in the wrong direction where she said the men had gone. The Hebrews told her to hang a red thread from her window. Once they were safe, they climbed down a rope and ran into the hills. But more fascinating is who these two men were.  One was Caleb who had gone along with the earlier spies and not said the land and people were dangerous; and the other was Pinchas, a Levite.  What is important here is that he represented the spiritual and in chassidic lore he is said to have not really been seen by Rahab for he was a spiritual being, unlike Caleb, and was not bound to the body. It is this combination of the physical and the spiritual that allows us to transcend what we think are limits.
