SHELACH

What are the consequences of lies?  The Zohar answers this in response to the lies told by the scouts – the spies – sent to discover the nature of the agriculture and the peoples who lived on Canaan.  They came back with giant fruits – grapes, pomegranate and fig – and claimed the people there were hostile giants. They lied for various reasons – but two of the 12 – Joshua and Caleb – who according to the Zohar did carry a giant grape cluster (Rashi says they carried nothing – but who knows – we weren’t there – or may be we were, but forgot) and these two said what the other ten said was not true, but the people believed the others and were greatly afraid to enter into the Holy Land.  The consequences of the lie – the two Temples in the future would be destroyed – here David’s on the left and Solomon’s in 70 AD on the right.  Long range consequences of deceit.  Beware in our times as well.
