In this parsha as the tribes are enumerated there is suddenly a mention of one woman amidst all the men – Serah – daughter of Asher ( indicated by the symbol of that tribe on the back of her robe)
But why the mention of this individual? There is much midrashic commentary on her from being one who early recognized Moses as a leader, to being the one who showed him where Joseph’s bones had been placed in the Nile. Moses had committed to bringing Joseph’s remains out of Egypt. She provided the information to make this happen. She was known as a beauty and clearly had much wisdom being the one Joseph brothers chose to let their father Jacob know his favorite son was still alive after all the years, he had believed Joseph was dead. She sang a song accompanying herself on a lyre to ease Jacob into this new truth. She is said to have been one of the few beings to enter the next world alive. May we have her insight.
