Abraham is told by Hashem to leave his home with his wife Sarah and her handmaiden Hagar and their son Ishmael and with his brother’s son Lot and Abraham is also told that his descendants will be as numerous as the stars. Abraham’s tent is open by the mountains inviting all inside, but Lot is more concerned with his cattle and possessions. Abraham builds an altar to Hashem, here made of the colors of the Kabbalah’s sephirot. Concerned for his wife when they go down to Egypt from a famine, he asks her to pretend to be his sister, so pharaoh doesn’t have him killed. Once pharaoh learns the truth and recognizes Abraham’s connections to the Higher Power, he gives Abraham flocks. Abraham’s story continues with his joining the kings in a righteous war to help Lot, and after the victory, he is given bread and wine acknowledged by another spiritual leader Melchizedek. And the parsha ends with Abraham agreeing to circumcision and Hashem promising to be his shield.
