What is beauty? The Zohar says that when Abraham and Sarah came to Egypt only then did he noticed that she was beautiful. What had he seen before this? He had seen their internal spiritual beauty. This transcends physical beauty. But here in Egypt, a culture submerged in imagery from its architecture to its sculpture and graphics, the physical had dominance. And now in this space Abraham saw Sarah’s physical beauty. And he was also then afraid that others here would too and then want to take her. The story then speaks of his hiding her in a box to keep her from the ravenous Egyptians, but they would later discover her and deliver her to the Pharaoh.
