The haftorah is from Obidiah, a difficult prophet who, like many, chastised those who had abandoned the truth and removed themselves, being compared in a metaphor, to living in a cliff thinking they would not be punished for their foolishness and cruelty, and that though they considered themselves invincible like the eagle in the starry sky, they would fall and they would be treated poorly, given the worst of the harvest like the smallest of grapes, and eating bread from false friends, and they would fall into traps. And though they kept righteous people away from their borders, they too would end up slaughtered. But the fire of truth and commitment to Hashem’s ways will burn off these reprobates like straw in a blaze. Another promise that salvation can and will happen despite the depths we fall into.
