Haftorah Mishpatim Jeremiah 34:8-22 & 33:25-26

Haftorah Mishpatim Jeremiah 34:8-22 & 33:25-26

Another haftorah filled with horrid prophesies, as Jeremiah warns us that since we keep enslaving our own people against the will of Hashem, we ourselves will become carrion for the birds and Jerusalem, our cities, our possessions will be lost and destroyed.  The drawing shows the slaves in the corners and the piles of bodies reminiscent of the Holocaust as well as the burning of Jerusalem.  But as with other disaster filled haftorah, there is still a promise.  Two lines from another chapter are added about the return of night and day that suggest our leaders will reemerge – our political and religious emissaries – our king and Kohen Gadol (High Priest).  May we cease treating others as inferiors and establish fairness in our communities so that we deserve leaders to speak and administer kindness and justice for all of us.
