Five items are mentioned in this haftorah from Joshua: the people traveling through the desert for many reasons were not circumcised and here about to cross over the Jordan under Joshua’s leadership, it was time to make the men sacred and so circumcisions happened. Joshua also told the priests to take the ark to the other side bringing the truth and wisdom with them as they advanced. And when they entered this promised land, the mana that had fed us daily stopped, we were going to have to provide for ourselves. And as they moved forward, Joshua was confronted by a “man” – and angel – who like when Moses was confronted by the burning bush – Joshua is told to remove his shoe – many interpretations but bottom line – we need to realize the sacred space we are in – this very planet – and honor it. And here too are the people being reminded to celebrate Pesach.
