Here in the haftorah of Zechariah, the prophet is shown Joshua standing before an angel with Satan to his right wanting to undermine him. Joshua was clothed in filthy garments for allowing the descendants to stray from a righteous life, but he is told that his own iniquities are forgiven for his striving to restore faith, and a pure mitre will now be set on his head as he is redressed by angels. And now come some of the strangest imagery of the prophets. Sages interpret these various visions which include a stone with seven facets, seven eyes. I have struggled with a meaning here. Is it the multi-levels of Hashem’s insights? We are told in this short vision that a rope is untied. Are we freed from our limitations? When the descendants of Joshua reject the seductions of other ways and women, the angels restore Joshua’s stature and as seen below on the right, the two olive trees that on their own press the grapes into oil for the candelabra, this vision is thought to be about the union of priest and politician/leader – Joshua and Zerabbabel at that time. Supporting each other with spiritual truth in action, a balance emerges, and in that peace, true prosperity where neighbors sit beneath the fig trees and share their food. May we all reject deceptions and open our hearts to deeper truths and realize the vision of peace with all communities. And maybe like that multi-facets stone see deeper into ourselves and our world.
