Why do intelligent leaders and advisors take the wrong path? Here the Zohar speaks to the well-known story of the powerful mystic Bilaam, who was paid gold and bought off to condemn the Hebrews, and neither he nor his assistants now see the angel blocking his path, which only his own donkey sees, and even miraculously speaks to him of this warning vision in front of him. But Bilaam is distracted. By the grape vines and then more intently his focus goes to the two heads in the dark mountain whom the Holy One condemned and buried there up to their necks. These were two angels Aza and Azazel who complained that humans should not have been created as they were bound to sin and destruction. And now they get Bilaam’s attention and will encourage his foolishness.
