Vayechi (“Jacob lived in the land”)

Genesis 47:28 – 50:26

After blessing his sons, death enveloped Jacob gently and instead of this being the Angel of Death it was the Shekhinah which is the feminine aspect of Hashem extending into the world of time and space.  The easiest transition through death is said to be having the Shekhinah kiss you as happened to Jacob and it is compared to removing a hair from a glass of milk.

In Kabbalistic thought, as we die, the higher sephirot energy centers rise from the body – the guf – reuniting with the higher soul called the neshomah. These colored discs represent the upper six sephirot leaving Jacob’s body in this graceful exit.
