The angels did not want the Torah to be given to humans and complained about the presence of a mortal amongst them. Moses was told by Hashem to respond and he argued that each of the ten commandments were declared for us, not for angels, as they don’t covet, or give false testimony, or steal, or commit adultery, or kill, and they have no parents to honor, nor do they work needing a shabbos, nor do they take the name of Hashem in vain, or worship other gods, nor were they there when the Hebrews were in slavery and then freed by Hashem. Moses queried: how then do these ten statements apply to you? The angels acknowledged the truth of Moses’s words. Yes, we are often unappreciative of the gift of life and behave poorly toward others, and the ethics of Torah is a guide to overcome these negative behaviors.
