CHUKAT

The challenge for even the greatest leaders is to transcend their egos and emotional reactions.  What is truly amazing about Jewish history is we admit the frailties of our greatest of prophets.  Here Moses was facing scoffers and complainers, for once his beloved sister Miriam, who had recently died, a rock associated with her that miraculously and continuously spewed for healthy water to all the tribes, now that stopped, and a vocal group of doubters blamed Moses. Hashem said to Moses to speak to the rock.  But he also knew that his brother Aaron the peacemaker was soon to die and here he was overwhelmed by grief and insults, so he struck the rock which at first bled and then suddenly poured down a torrent or water literally drowning the group of complainers.  But because he himself had doubted Hashem’s instruction to just talk to the rock, he was denied to personally enter the Holy Land. We must be open to what life offers us even though it often is not our plan.
