Guilt and shame. We all suffer from them at times. How do we release ourselves from these negative feelings? We can make amends with those we have hurt. And symbolically as a community we can acknowledge our responsibilities. The ritual in this week’s parsha speaks of two goats who represent us. One is chosen to be taken away from the community and bound in a red thread round its horns, it will be sacrificed to something called Azazel – a mythic name for the collector of negativity. May we purge ourselves of both wrong-doings and the debilitating emotions that limit our potentials. It was said when our community committed to correcting harmful behavior as the goat toppled over the cliff that red thread turned white.
