VA’ETCHANAN

The seven Aliyahs of Va”etchanan:

top right – Moses acknowledges Hashem’s strong hand controlling all existence ( the hand is a metaphor, of course, and here is it colored purple associated with the world of Yetzirah, formation, where images begin like in dreams and prophesies). Moses is told to climb a mountain and look on all sides to see where the promised land will be, where he is not allowed to go.  And he also tells the people that they are neither to add or subtract from the commandments.

top left – Moses reminds us how we stood below the mountain that had risen above us with raging fire and sound announcing the revelation that Hashem is the one and only Creator.

top center – We are told to abide by the teachings as we approach the holy land toward a sunrise and to build these three specific cities of refuge.

bottom right – And then for a second time we are given the ten commandments.

bottom left – Moses is asked by the tribal leaders to still be there intermediary with Hashem.

bottom center – And here is our most sacred prayer – the Shema – where we are told to teach our children and share the wisdom when we are walking by the way, when we are sitting down, and rising up, and lying down and remember that we were freed from the slavery of Egypt.

center center – And a strange end to this parsha where we are told to destroy the seven peoples of Canaan who advocate idolatry.
