MATOT

The seven Aliyahs of Matot:

top right – Moses speaks to the importance of vow, making them and keeping them.  And back then should a woman make one her father or husband had a day to cancel it and if they didn’t then the vow had to be kept.

top left – The Hebrews attack the Midianites who tried to seduce them away from their connection to Hashem. Phineas and the Kohen Eliezar lead them.

top center – Moses is angered that the troops spare the women who had in fact been sent to literally seduce them.

bottom right – The spoils of war – animals and slaves among them – are divided evenly between the soldiers and the rest of the community.

bottom left – The portions of the gold are also split between soldiers and the community under Moses’ guidance and a part is given to the kohanim who are assigned to lead ceremonies.

bottom center – The tribes of Rueben and Gad ask Moses to stay outside the holy land as they prefer the rich pastures on the other side of the Jordan.  At first Moses is suspicious.

center center – But when the tribes agree to be at the sides of the brethren when challenged or attacked then Moses accepts their request and tells them they can build cities there as well.
