In this busy haftorah, Jeremiah speaks the words of Hashem bemoaning why people have abandoned their G-d. Were we (indicated at the top left of the drawing) not brought out of the land of Egypt and led through the desert and darkness to productive forests, yet our priests and rulers deny Hashem and praise Baal and we have exchanged our worship for other tribes bowing down on their islands to rivers and fires. We have forsaken the fountains of truth and dug false cisterns that soon break and pour out their vile contents. We are becoming like prey with young lions roaring over us, our cities are being destroyed. Enemies will break our crown. We have become a harlot to false gods. We once were as a healthy vine. Can we now wash away our iniquities? We are like the deceiving camel, like a wild donkey pursuing corrupt desires. Withhold our foot from being bare stepping in mire. We are shamed like the caught thief. We say to the wood and the stone you are our gods. On our skirt is the blood of the innocents. Go out with hands on our heads for we will not prosper so diverted from truth. At the foot of the woman holding the stained garment are her jewels. Like her we are abandoning what is valuable. Many warnings here that we need to wake up to Hashem’s gifts or indeed we will wallow in despair.
