In our time of polarization and recrimination, the idea of sanctuary cities is controversial, but in Torah it is a necessity and the law. Anyone who unintentionally kills someone can be spared the blood libel of that time by heading to a specified sanctuary city. We should recognize that such sanctuary cities were willed by Hashem in our past and out of compassion we should provide them for those in need today.
