This haftorah speaks about Elijah. People were corrupted during this time following a false arrogant leaders who constantly deceived and attacked anyone who opposed him. When Elijah confronted this selfish dangerous despot Ahab and his corrupt wife Jezebel, she demanded Elijah’s death for speaking truth to power. He ran and in desperation asked Hashem to take his life; but while he slept beneath a tree, an angel appeared and provided him food and drink, and he then went to a cave on Mount Horeb (Sinai) for 40 days. A number reflected in so many other prophets and cultures as part of a purification and expansion. Elijah was then told by Hashem to stand on the mountain and, “Behold, My presence will pass” before you.” Elijah did this and first there was a violent wind that shattered boulders, and then an earthquake, and then a fire, but Elijah realized that these were not the essence of Hashem’s presence. When he was still, he sensed a silent voice and knew that deep within him, within us all, is the essence of Hashem, always quietly speaking to and with us. After this he took on the task of battling ignorance and evil, and enlisted Elisha who was, when he met him, ploughing a field with 12 oxen. Together they led the spiritual revolution. We need such honest visionaries now.
