This haftorah reads more like a Greek tragedy than a Jewish story. Here the warrior Jephthah is approached by the Israelite elders to lead them in a fight against an enemy called Ammon. Jepthah was the son of a prostitute and rejected because of this. But now they needed him. First, he sends messenger (below right) with a peaceful document, but the Ammon king rejects these proposals. Then he leads the battle, but beforehand vows that he if he wins, he will sacrifice the first thing he that comes out of his door when he returns home. And as he approaches, his daughter bursts out of the house to greet him and … yes, he sacrificed his daughter. Be careful of what you commit to in the future.
