The body as external sign of internal troubles is a theme of the parsha and Haftorah. Those who spread bad words about others which damages the speaker, the other and the listener – such people in ancient times had their bodies burst out it leprous lesions. Imagine what some of our current foul-mouthed lying leaders would look like if this disease were still prevalent ! Here a father who has lied about the prophet Elisha, whom he served, is with this son covered with this disease, and banished to outside the city gates. At the time the city Samaria was surrounded by an enemy the Arameans and people were starving. Elisha had said to the disbelieving king and his henchman that soon food would be so available that a shekel would buy a bundle of flour. The four lepers also famished decide to sneak into the enemy’s camp for food and what they find is that the enemy has fled and food is abundant. The enemy freaked because they heard the roar of a sky filled with hail that had been suspended by Hashem since the plagues of Egypt but was now moving over their camp so they ran away. When word of this was past to the king, he still not believing sent out two men on horses who confirmed that camp’s abandonment and the plethora of food. People then rushed from the city and crushed the disbelieving henchman of the king who was told the food would be cheap but he would not be around to see it. Trampled to death. Let’s us be conscious and beware of what we say and what we believe.
