VAYIKRA

As we begin this new book, we read about the complex sacrificial processes.  For many these seem irrelevant to our era.  But behind the rituals is a deeper reminder of the good fortune of our lives,   and that our survival depends on the “sacrifices” of many of Hashem’s creations from the food we eat to the trees we use.  A truer word is offerings.  We should be conscious of our connection to everything that exists and show gratitude for these gifts.  Here the owner of the beast to be offered makes a physical connection to the animal, recognizing that he could just as easily be that being.  May our own lives be a contribution to others as these being are to us. And may we recognize our responsibilities toward the planet and all sentient beings or we indeed may deserve to be sacrificed.
