Moses has asked to see the face of Hashem who has told him that to see Hashem is to die. Hashem then tells Moses to place himself in the cleft of the rocks and Hashem’s symbolic hand will pass behind him with all the power of nature. It is told that what appeared before Moses was a geometric like figure that is similar to the knotting of tefillin.
