This Haftorah reflects the parsha in the drowning of the enemy. Here the prophetess Deborah foretells the destruction of the vicious Canaanites. Below right she tells general Barak to assemble troops at Mount Tabor and she foretells that the heavens themselves – upper right – will join the attack – lower left – so that the last of the enemy is drowned in the river. The enemy general Sisera tries to escape and is given what he thinks is succor by Yael who provides milk and a bed and then hammers a peg into his temple. Sometimes Goliaths have to be eliminated. The second part of the reading has Deborah sing the story, and here in her mouth, she intones the river Kishinev sweeping away the enemy. When Hashem gathers us and we unite to defeat evil leaders and empires, we are, at times, invincible! May we hear the truth from our leaders and have the courage to end ignorant enemies.
