Pinchas (“Pinchas, son of Elazar”)

Numbers 25:10 – 30:1

Knowing that he would not enter the holy land alive, at Hashem’s calling Moses anoints his spiritual student and natural leader Joshua.  The illumination of Moses was passed on to Joshua.

In the upper left are the daughters of Tzelafchad who had died in the wilderness. They now made a request to share in the land of the tribe of Menasseh to which they belonged. Here was a statement of equality of women with men.

Below them are the sacrificial animals – the bull and the he-goat, and meal offerings of fruits – as part of the rituals of the holy festivals.
